Iran’s Assembly of Experts' building hit in reported Israeli strike

TEHRAN — A building linked to Iran’s influential Assembly of Experts was targeted Tuesday in what Iranian and Israeli media described as an Israeli strike.Iran’s Press TV said the old building of the Assembly of Experts in Qom was struck in US-Israeli airstrikes.Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that the structure hit in Qom was an old auxiliary building that was not used for official meetings.A senior Israeli official told Israel’s public broadcaster KAN that the army targeted Iran’s Council of Experts “while they were convening to choose a new supreme leader.”No casualties had been reported as of Tuesday.The Assembly of Experts, a powerful body of clerics and jurists, is responsible for selecting and overseeing Iran’s highest political and religious authority.Iran on Sunday confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior officials in Israeli and US strikes.Regional tensions escalated after the United States and Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran on Saturday, reportedly killing nearly 800 people.
